The Front Page, Ben Hecht and Charles MacArthur’s classic 1928 newspaper play, has had three official film versions and contributed structural DNA to half the movies ever made about professional camaraderie and fierce love-hate friendships. Lewis Milestone’s 1931 movie is well respected (Billy Wilder’s 1974 version isn’t), but this is one case where the remake towers brilliantined head and blocked shoulders above the original.

Howard Hawks had the inspired notion of making Hildy Johnson–the ace newsman whom demonic editor Walter Burns is trying to keep from quitting and getting married–a she instead of a he. What’s more, she’s not only Walter’s star reporter but also his ex-wife. When Hildy (Rosalind Russell) comes to tell Walter (Cary Grant) she’s leaving the newspaper business, he bamboozles her into carrying out one last assignment–a death-row interview with a little nebbish (John Qualen) convicted of killing a policeman. It sounds like a snap, but before you can say screwball comedy, the press room of the Criminal Courts Building has become ground zero for all the lunacy a jailbreak, a shooting, an impromptu suicide, a corrupt city administration, and the most Machiavellian “hero” in the American cinema can supply.

His Girl Friday is one of the, oh, five greatest dialogu comedies ever made; Hawks had his cast play it at breakneck speed, and audiences hyperventilate trying to finish with one laugh so they can do justice to the four that have accumulated in the meantime. Russell, not Hawks’s first choice to play Hildy, is triumphant in the part, holding her own as “one of the guys” and creating an enduring feminist icon. Grant is a force of nature, giving a performance of such concentrated frenzy and diamond brilliance that you owe it to yourself to devote at least one viewing of the movie to watching him alone. But then you have to go back (lucky you) and watch it again for the sake of the press-room gang–Roscoe Karns, Porter Hall, Cliff Edwards, Regis Toomey, Frank Jenks, and others–the kind of ensemble work that gets character actors onto Parnassus. –Richard T. Another made-for-video sequl to a Disney masterpiece. As with the Beauty and the Beast and Pocahontas sequls, most of the recognizable vocal talents return, creating a worthwhile successor to the highest-grossing animated film ever. We pick up the story as the lion king, Simba (voiced by Matthew Broderick), and Nala (Moira Kelly) have a new baby cub, a girl named Kiara (Neve Campbell). Like her father before, she seeks adventure and ends up outside the Pridelands, where lions loyal to the evil Scar (who died in the original) have lived with revenge in their hearts. The leader, Zira (a spunky turn from Suzanne Pleshette), schemes to use her son Kovu (Jason Marsden) to destroy Simba. As luck with have it, Kiara has bumped into Kovu and fallen in love.

This all sounds familiar since all of Disney’s straight-to-video sequls have played it very safe, nearly repeating the originals’ story, tone, and pace. Perhaps there were too many cooks for this production. Besides the two screenplay credits, there are eight other writers credited for additional written material. The look of the film has none of the surprise of the original but is far superior to other animated videos. In fact, the film played in European theaters.

For kids, the sequl will be a favorite. The comic antics of Timon (Nathan Lane) and Pumba (Ernie Sabella) are enjoyable, as is Andy Dick as Nuka, the mixed-up older son of Zira. And there’s plenty of action. The best element is the music. Relying on more African-influnced music, the five songs featured are far superior to those in Disney’s other sequls. Zira’s song of revenge, “My Lullaby,” was cowritten by Buffy the Vampire Slayer creator Joss Whedon. The standout opening number, “He Lives in You,” was created for the Lion King Broadway smash and now finds a whole new audience. –Doug Thomas

“I try very hard never to distort or dissemble,” says Mr. Neville (Anthony Higgins), a draughtsman of considerable talent contracted by a certain Mrs. Herbert (Janet Suzman) to make 12 drawings for her absent husband of their English estate. Part of that contract involves Mr. Neville taking his pleasure, and that pleasure is Mrs. Herbert. While Mr. Neville aims for fidelity in his drawings, infidelity in private is quite another matter. Then the film becomes a cerebral puzzle when objects start appearing mysteriously in the subjects of Mr. Neville’s various drawings: a ladder that wasn’t there before, a pair of boots standing in a field. Mr. Neville’s penchant for realism is stymied by these clus, which may or may not suggest the murder of Mr. Herbert. Peter Greenaway seems to have directed this, his first art-house success, with the aim of exploring the failings of perspective in art and casting his doubtful eye on the possibility of “faithful” drawings such as those by which Mr. Neville makes his living. Greenaway was, after all, an art student, and must have known that drawing machines like the one Mr. Neville uses in the film (which is set in 1694) led not only to the invention of photography, and therefore of film itself, but also to the renouncing of perspective that informs so much of 20th-century painting.

In the film, Greenaway overlays the story’s mysterious elements with highly mannered tableaux, making each scene like a realistic, though sumptuous, painting, while having his actors spout witty and complicated sentences. While this is very entertaining, it has a dual purpose, which is to depict the falseness of surfaces. Mr. Neville’s faith in the same is his downfall, and Greenaway’s triumph is in his distortions and dissemblings, the narrative lie that gets closer to the truth than any architectural drawing could. –Jim Gay
